| REPLACING BATTERY IN CULMRITE |
| |
Over the last year there has been a significant amount of discussion regarding battery changes on a CULMRITE™. This discussion has led to advice regarding how to replace a battery yourself. The advice includes comments implying that we as a Company are "ripping you off". Please be aware that we do not intend to "rip off" anyone. We simply are trying to provide the best service we can to support a good product.
When we service a CULMRITE™, we not only replace the battery, we also:
a. Adjust, tighten and seal the sensitive weigh device/mechanism
b. Provide software upgrades if required
c. Install any engineering improvements that have been made to the product
d. Re-seal the scale/Battery
e. Calibrate the scale
We have no problem at all with our customers replacing their own battery. It is important however that if you are going to replace it yourself, you replace it properly. The battery is dip sealed so protect it from electrolysis, not to hide its identity like some web-talk has so ridiculously implied. If the battery and wires are not sealed properly, moisture can cause electrical corrosion that can work its way down to the PC board. Once the PC board has corrosion on it, it acts like a cancer to the components and the product cannot be saved. It is critical that you don't provide any path for water or oxygen if you change the battery out yourself.
It is also very important if changing your battery to use good Electrical Static Discharge (ESD) protection. Some of the sensitive circuitry on the PC board can be easily damaged by ESD. If this happens, it can seriously shorten the life of your scale or possibly kill it altogether.
It is important to note that the only XL models we have not been able to repair because of the type of damage described above, have been scales that customers have tried to work on themselves. In all cases, the scales have been damaged by either corrosion or ESD.
